Does this be, and if and so could anyone tell me where I can download it?

Just looking for a free version that I can download, don't desire to apply the app shop and don't have iLife.

I don't need a new and fancy version, something basic is fine - but looking for the latest I can get for free on 10.six.5 if such a thing exists.

No it does not be. The iLife suite in of itself (older versions of it) are not free and there isn't a standalone version that is free other than the current version which will not work on Snow Leopard.

In that case, what'due south the latest version of iLife that will work with 10.half-dozen.five?

Does information technology allow y'all to only install GB?

In that case, what's the latest version of iLife that will piece of work with 10.vi.five?

Why are you staying with 10.6.five?

iLife '09 will be slap-up for 10.6
(run your Arrangement Update to do all updates, which will update a diverseness of parts of your arrangement.)
Aye, yous can choose a custom install of only Garageband.

Just realised my original software reinstall drive (or the i that came with the laptop anyway - factory slim white apple 8gb stick) says on it "Mac OSX v10.half-dozen, iLife '11".

I tried installing GB (alone) off it merely it fails with no reason given. It's the same drive I used for installing OSX and had no bug (it has 10.six.5 on it).

Is information technology just the drive existence flaky? Seems odd to include an incompatible version.

Where did you get the "factory slim white apple tree 8gb stick"?
Apple never supplied Bone X on a flash drive, prior Lion (OS 10 x.7)

Still should work, but Apple didn't provide that.
Did you run the iLife installer, and select a custom install of merely Garageband?
Or, only endeavour a file copy from the installer (which will not work)?
Have you tried just letting iLife install, without changing any settings? You can always just trash the apps that you don't want to keep.

Is there some reason that you don't upgrade your Bone X system to 10.6.viii? Y'all tin run Software Update, or just download and install the combined updater directly from Apple - from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

It'southward from Apple tree. The 2010 Macbook Air came with a USB software restore key which had 10.6.4 or 10.6.v on information technology.

Yeah Apple tree did provide information technology, it's the 1 described in the mail service above. That is coincidentally my machine exactly - Belatedly '10 MBA and the Apple stick has 10.six.five and iLife '11 on it. I'm a bit surprised that people here said only GB from iLife '09 would piece of work but it seems the computer came with 'xi - confused.

I ran the installer, and chose a custom install of only GarageBand (and the compulsory iLife files which you can't un-check). I did not effort installing everything but I really don't want to do that. Plenty of free space on disk etc.

It doesn't attempt to do much and quickly says an unknown mistake occurred, is there a log somewhere I could check?

Unless y'all have a particularly compelling reason not to update to 10.half dozen.8, run Software Update and utilise all the updates that appear. It make take more than i round of update/restart to get them all. (Also note that all the updates you get in Software Update are free.) Then run into if Garageband installs. If information technology does, you'll demand to run Software Update once more to become updates for Garageband.
